Top Pages of 2010

Happy 2011 everyone! Maybe you're new to Being & Tim, or just want to catch up on the best bits of 2010. Either way these are the ten most popular posts from last year. Enjoy! becca xo

1. SuperKant vs UBERMAN
Probably the most burning desire of every philosophy undergraduate is to see Immanuel Kant getting beaten up by a Nietzsche-Arnie muscle-bound fighting machine. It is for these undergraduates that I made this cartoon. May it help them pass their exams.

2. The Shortest Summary of Being & Time Ever!
I'm not kidding myself here: this post probably got so high in the list due to the proximity of the words 'shortest' 'summary' and 'Being & Time': nevertheless, I'd like to think that those crammers, led by destiny and Google to this post, may not have left empty-handed. Or at least not in a terrible funk of dashed hopes and desperation...

3. Being & Technology
This is one of my personal favourites, as I got to geek out something chronic. I don't know if Being ever did attend the 'Free Socrates Fundraiser' or if 'The Communist Revolution' ever happened, but I'm pretty sure that there will be more cartoons in the same vein as this one in 2011. If Being doesn't get paranoid and delete his facebook account that is....

4. A Book of Freudian Jokes
Number 4 mixes the two highest forms of wit: puns and toilet humour to create, what can only be called, a Platonic form of beauty and truth!

5. Schrodinger's LOLcats
My plan to write and illustrate the Dr Seuss-style Schrodinger's Cat in the Hat had to be put on hold in 2010, due to my inability to quite get my head around quantum theory. But that didn't stop you from flocking to this 'hilarious' post. Fingers and paws crossed for a lengthier offering on the same theme in 2011.

6. Philosophy PA-R-T-AY!
Technically, this cartoon is from 2009, but philosophers playing twister just seems to be one of those subjects that has eternal interest in the media, and of course always comes up in the syllabus.

7. Alvin, Simon & Theodor W.Adorno
I'm always surprised that this one is so popular, as Adorno never quite seems to make the philosophy A-list, if you know what I mean: he's like the Velvet Underground of the critical theory scene: very influential but his albums never made it big when he released them. In any case, he really does look like a chipmunk. I wonder if he was the inspiration for the Theodore character after all...

8. Another Blog!
Actually, maybe Walter Benjamin was the Velvet Underground and Adorno was Nico....perhaps we'll never know..Anyway this post was to do with one of my other blogs: Friends on Benefits, the story of a pig trying to overcome his lack of opposable thumbs and find work: and his friend Becca, on the dole by day and  SUPER-DEPRESSIVE at night: See her normal levels of energy! Witness her ability to hold your gaze! Awe at her ability to fulfil day-to-day tasks! A lot more to come on this blog in 2011.

9. The Limits of Sense!
This was me trying to get all Wittgensteinian on your ass, and sort of succeeding. Wittgenstein, apart from being an infamously obscure and brilliant philosopher in equal parts, is a man just asking to be ridiculed: if you consider that one of his most famous quotations is 'I don't know why we're here but I'm pretty sure it's not to enjoy ourselves.' then you might begin to see what I mean. I'm gonna do my best to try and understand his philosophy more this year, if only to take the mickey better...

10. I hope Adam Smith don't mind it.
Adam Smith may not mind but I certainly mind being over-shadowed by youtube video made by someone that isn't me. Nevermind that it's funny, erudite, educational...etc. See for yourselves just how 'rubbish' it is....then look at my Being & Tim youtube videos :-D. Hopefully I'll make some more animations this year, once we've found the plug for the video recorder...oops!
